Fractional CFO / Controller
RemoteUS overlap as neededFractional or retainer
Retainer or fractional scope
Role at a glance
- Owns
- Books, close process, controls, reporting, tax coordination, payroll review, cash visibility, and finance operating rhythm.
- Does not own
- Fundraising ownership, legal work, or day-to-day product/operations management.
- Works with
- Founders, Su, outside accountants, payroll providers, and vendors.
- Success looks like
- Finance is accurate, timely, decision-useful, and calm before the company gets more complex.
About the role
- Own the finance layer that keeps the company clean as it scales: books, close process, reconciliations, reporting, tax coordination, payroll review, vendor spend, and financial controls.
- Partner with the founders, Su, and outside accountants so finance is accurate, timely, and operationally useful instead of only backward-looking.
- Create founder-ready reporting around cash, runway, recurring spend, margins, hiring plans, and budget decisions.
- Your objective is to give Covent a finance operating system we can trust before complexity arrives.
What this looks like
- Founder questions about runway, hiring, and recurring spend should not require a spreadsheet archaeology project. You create a monthly view that makes cash and commitments clear.
- Vendor spend, payroll, cards, and contractor payments start spreading across tools. You create lightweight controls and review rhythms before the mess becomes expensive.
- The books close, but the output is not useful for decisions. You turn accounting into operating insight: margins, burn, cash timing, tax exposure, and budget choices.
Where this role stops
- This is not bookkeeping only. The output needs to help founders make hiring, runway, spend, and margin decisions.
- This is not a big-company finance bureaucracy. The controls should be lightweight enough for an early-stage team to actually use.
Qualifications
- CPA, controller, fractional CFO, or senior accounting background.
- Strong bookkeeping, month-end close, tax coordination, financial reporting, and controls experience.
- Comfortable designing lightweight finance processes for an early-stage company.
- Able to work with AI tools, spreadsheets, accounting software, and founders who move quickly.
Compensation
Retainer or fractional monthly scope, based on experience, cadence, and ownership. This can be structured as a CPA/controller engagement, fractional CFO support, or a path toward a larger finance leadership role as the company grows.
Benefits
- Monthly team activities, optional monthly dinner invites, and annual retreats as the team grows.
- Generous AI tooling budget for tools that improve your workflow.
- Near-unlimited Codex access for engineering and product work, with optional Claude or other AI tools by role.
- Profit-share potential plus equity grants or exit participation for long-term contributors.
- Clear career ladders in progress, with direct founder feedback and fast ownership paths.
- Direct access to founders, customers, and real product decisions.
- High-agency environment with meaningful ownership and fast feedback.
Offer structure
- Full-time engagement. We don't run part-time trials.
- 90-day probationary period for mutual fit. Either party can end at any time; payroll for actual days worked.
- After probation: equity grants, exit participation, or profit-share may unlock based on role, seniority, and long-term fit. 30-day notice on company-side termination.
About Covent
We pivoted, but we are a technology-first real estate company. Being tech first lets us subsidize our costs, so we can make more competitive offers.
It is a very hard business with very slim margins. If it is truly for homeowners, we have to be tech first and cut as many middlemen as possible.
The work matters. If the product is confusing, support gets harder. If the design is sloppy, trust drops. If the code is fragile, the team slows down. We hire people who own the outcome.

How we work
Question, delete, simplify, accelerate, automate
We improve work in that order. Ask what problem we are solving, delete what does not help, simplify what remains, shorten the feedback loop, then automate.
Tools are leverage
We provide the tools, context, and access needed to do ambitious work. The point is not the tool; the point is solving the hardest problem and shipping the clearest system.
Owners, not task completers
Your job is not just your job description. If you see a better way, say it. If you see a problem, raise it. If you can fix it, fix it.
Speed is learning faster
Small loops beat big plans. Ask early, ship smaller, surface blockers fast, and communicate with facts: what changed, what is blocked, what is next, who owns it, and when it will be done.

Project
A skills evaluation and nothing more. Scoped to what the job actually asks for, so it shows us whether you can do the work rather than testing you for its own sake.
